These include both first-time offshore students and onshore returning students. Not every institute can provide offers of place to international students. Only those education providers that are signatories to the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 can do so. This visa allows the holder to study full-time with part-time work rights (full-time can be undertaken during holidays) in most cases. The student visa granted is normally for the same length of time as the study paid for. For these applications, a person’s bona fide (genuine intentions) and funds are very closely assessed. Immigration officers want to know why a particular course has been chosen, how this aligns with a person’s profile, and whether there is a genuine intent to study the course. Funds must be from a genuine source and be genuinely available to the student.

Studying in New Zealand: A Top Choice for International Students
New Zealand continues to be a leading destination for international students, attracting thousands each year with its world-class education system, wide range of study programs, and appealing post-study work opportunities.
At the core of the education framework is the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF), which is managed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). This framework covers both secondary and tertiary qualifications. NZQA is the official government body responsible for overseeing the quality of New Zealand qualifications, as well as assessing overseas qualifications to determine their equivalence in New Zealand.
With over 30 years of experience, we are proud to guide both new and returning students in planning their academic and career journeys. Whether you’re looking to upskill or advance further in your field, our strong partnerships with reputable education providers across New Zealand help us deliver tailored support for every student.
Popular Types of Student Visas
New Zealand offers several types of student visas. The two most commonly used are:
- Fee-Paying Student Visa
- Dependent Child Student Visa
Requirements for Fee-Paying International Students
To obtain a student visa, international students must meet specific criteria set by Immigration New Zealand (INZ):
- Have an offer of place from a recognized New Zealand educational institution.
- Show proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees.
- Be covered by comprehensive travel and medical insurance for the entire duration of their stay.
- Demonstrate the ability to support themselves financially, or have a sponsor.
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Hold a return ticket or sufficient funds to buy one, or have sponsorship for this
- Prove they are genuinely coming to New Zealand to study and not for other purposes.
Dependent Child Student Visa
If you hold a valid work or student visa for New Zealand, you can bring your dependent child to study at a New Zealand primary or secondary school. The great news is that they will be treated as domestic students, meaning you won’t have to pay tuition fees for their education.

Dependent Student Visas
Dependent children of certain kinds of work and student visa holders can apply for a student visa to allow them to go to school while their parents work or study in New Zealand. These students are treated as domestic students and do not have to pay international tuition fees. However, it is critical that applicants are aware of the cut-off age for dependency for temporary visas. Children aged 20 or over are not eligible to file a visa based on their relationship with their parents, but can file a visa in their own right. This age group will no longer be eligible for dependent student visas. To support a dependent student visa, a parent on an Accredited Employer Work Visa must earn at least $55,844 per year before tax.
